Drugs, alcohol, and sex became a fabric of her life. As the success continued on the music scene, so did the chaos behind the veneer of serenity. She remarked how she “loved being there… I felt wanted and special…I was praying as I sang… I felt the Spirit.”īut as her music career began to take shape, Mary became distant from her church life. She began to attend church at the age of 12, and that is where she discovered healing through music. As the years passed, she recalled: “It was a dangerous place… She left us with people she thought could be trusted. Leaving behind her father at a young age was not easy, but then again, her destination was not exactly paradise. Mary and her mother fled to Schlobohm Houses as a way to escape their abusive environment.
